Description of Collection

Content description

All countries of South-East Asia, including South-East Asian peoples in India and China. All subjects, but chiefly History, Economics, Sociology, Politics, Anthropology, Geography and Literature.

History and development

Originates in the foundation of a Centre for South-East Asian Studies in the University of Hull in 1962, following the Hayter Report. Has grown to be the largest consolidated South-East Asia collection in Britain outside London.

Strengths

Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Brunei. Also topics such as peripheral and minority peoples, tourism, Krakatau and Indonesian novels.

Open access (apart from rare and valuable material). Arranged first by country then by Library of Congress classification.

Collection policy

The policy of the staff of the Centre for South-East Asian Studies, who are responsible for the majority of S.E. Asian book selection, is to purchase materials relevant to their teaching and research and to enhance the value of a useful and significant national collection (from notes sent to the Library’s Head of Acquisitions).
