Description of Collection

Content description

Manuscripts: A small collection of 12 manuscripts, principally vocabularies and poetry, including 5 birch bark manuscripts in the Sharada script, yet to be catalogued.

Printed books: 20th century poetry, religious treatises and translations constitute a total of approx. 300 titles.

Serials: Publications by the Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages.

History and development

The Kashmiri manuscripts were acquired from retired employees of the East India Company, public sales and private collectors. Prior to 1947, printed books were requisitioned under the Indian Press and Registration of Books Act (1867). Subsequent acquisitions have been sporadic and dependent upon availability.

Strengths

The manuscripts include an album of 19th century Kashmiri poetry which is of particular note for its illumination and calligraphy. Two runs of serials issued by the Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages from 1965 to 1975 offer a selection of otherwise unpublished modern Kashmiri works.
