Singapore Studies

Collection Details

Singapore Studies held at SOAS Library [Institution record]

Description of Collection

Content description

There are about 2,000 items in the collection, the majority of works are in English, published in the late 19th and in the 20th century. There are some 19th and early 20th century items published in Malay, both in Jawi (Arabic) and Rumi (Roman) script, that are part of the Indonesian and Malay Studies collection.

The collection covers the history, politics and government of Singapore and the Straits Settlements; Singapore's relationship with Malaysia; and the country's economic and financial development. There is a growing collection on the English language literature of Singapore.

History and development

The Singapore Studies collection was originally part of the Malay collection, Singapore in the 19th and early 20th centuries being a centre of Malay language publishing. Following Singapore's independence from Malaysia in 1965, English language became increasingly important and a distinct collection of English language material on Singapore has developed.

Strengths

There is a comprehensive collection of Singapore literature in English, particularly strong on Singapore fiction published from the 1970s until to date. This includes both material by resident Singaporean writers and works published by Singaporean writers living overseas. This literature collection compliments the collection of Malaysian English language writers. There is a small collection on Singapore English ('Singlish'), complementing the region's other varieties of English from Malaysia and the Philippines. Items on Singapore's history; business, finance and economics; politics and government, including official publications, are collected. There is a developing collection of Singapore film, broadcasting and media studies.

General arrangement and access regulations

Mainly open access. Older (pre-1880 publications), mostly in Malay; archives, manuscripts and microforms are closed access. Primarily in English. Malay language material published in Singapore is placed in the Malay language collection.
