ASEAN and South East Asian Studies

Collection Details

ASEAN and South East Asian Studies held at SOAS Library [Institution record]

Description of Collection

Content description

The bulk of the South East Asian Studies collection is made up of the individual country study collections. There is a growing and distinct collection on South East Asia as a whole and on the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Most of the material on ASEAN is in English, although there are some items in Malay, Indonesian, Thai and Vietnamese.

Most material dates from the 1970s onwards. The collection numbers more than 4000 items.

History and development

The collection originally consisted of a small collection of material on general South East Asian history and anthropology. With the formation of ASEAN in 1967 the collection on ASEAN and the politics and economics of the region has grown substantially. The collection also includes material on the Pacific Rim and the Asia-Pacific region.

Strengths

The collection is particularly strong on ASEAN itself and on the politics, government, security and international relations, human rights and civil society issues relating to Southeast Asia. There are important collections on ethnic and religious minorities, including the Chinese and other diasporas of Southeast Asia. There is a comprehensive collection on finance, economics, trade and development issues relating to Southeast Asia and the Asia-Pacific region. There is a large collection of material relating to the Asian financial crisis. There is material on urban and rural development, population and human ecology, land reform, forestry, agriculture and sustainable development.

There are separate collections on mainland South East Asia and the Greater Mekong Subregion; and on maritime South East Asia and the Malay Archipelago.
