Collection Details

Indonesian and Malay Studies held at SOAS Library [Institution record]

Description of Collection

Content description

There are about 30,000 volumes in the collection, mostly published in the 19th and 20th centuries. There are also important early Malay manuscript collections. There are 10,000 volumes in Bahasa Indonesia and other Indonesian languages and 6,000 volumes in the Malay language of Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei. Many of the 19th and early 20th century publications are in Jawi (Arabic) script.

Western languages, mostly English with some smaller collections in Dutch, French and German total 8,000 volumes on Indonesia and about 4,000 volumes on Malaysia, Brunei and Borneo. Publications include material published in Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei as well as material about these three countries published elsewhere, particulary in Singapore, Australia, the U.K., the Netherlands and the U.S. The collection also includes approximately 250 serial titles; a large collection of Indonesian monographs and serials on microform; and audiovisual materials.

History and development

The collection has developed in parallel with the School's research and teaching requirements. Initially strongest on linguistics and language, there are also important literature holdings including translations into English.

There are major holdings on anthropology and on material from the colonial period. As the School has broadened its range of subjects, the Indonesian and Malay collections have expanded to cover the humanities generally, and increasingly the social sciences as well.

The Library is actively collecting material on trade, economics, banking and finance (including statistical data); on law, politics, democracy and human rights; and social, gender and development issues relating to contemporary Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei. The Library continues to acquire material on Indonesian, Malaysian and Bruneian history and archaeology, art, religion, folklore and anthropology.

Strengths

The collection has strong holdings on Indonesian and Malay linguistics, including other Indonesian languages such as Javanese, Balinese, Sundanese, Iban, Dayak and Brunei Malay. There is a representative collection of 19th and 20th century literature (novels, short stories, drama and poetry), including contemporary works, both in Indonesian and Malay, and translations into English. There is a growing collection of Singaporean and Malaysian English language literature, especially novels.

The library holds a representative collection on Islamic law and adat (customary law) relating to maritime South East Asia. There is a growing collection on the relationship between Islam and politics & civil society in the region; and material on ethnic and religious minorities and separatist movements.

There are holdings on urban and rural development, land reform, population and human ecology; and on agriculture, forestry and sustainable development.

As well as material on Indonesia as a whole there are separate European language collections on the regions and provinces of Indonesia (Bali, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Java, Sumatra, Nusa Tenggara and West Papua).

The collection on Indonesian, Malaysian and Singaporean Malay film and media studies is being developed - there is a collection of more than 350 films on video and DVD. There is an important collection on shadow theatre (wayang), music, art and architecture. The Indonesian music collection has over 500 audio-cassettes and CDs, especially of gamelan music.

General arrangement and access regulations

Mainly open access. Older (pre-1880 publications), archives, manuscripts and microforms are closed access. The European language collections (mostly English but also a significant collection in Dutch on the Netherlands East Indies and contemporary Indonesia) are arranged by country - Indonesia (including separate collections on the regions and provinces of Indonesia); Malaysia (including separate collections on Sarawak and Sabah) and Brunei. Within these country and regional groupings the collections are arranged by subject. The Asian language collections are divided into two main groups - one collection in Bahasa Indonesia and the other in Bahasa Malaysia/Melayu as spoken in Malaysia, Brunei and Singapore. There are smaller collections on the other languages of the region such as Javanese, Balinese, Sundanese, Iban and Dayak. These collections are also arranged by subject.

The exceptions are the law and the art and archaeology collections which are held in the relevant subject sections of the Library.
