Content description

There are about 5000 volumes in Western languages, mostly English and some older works in Spanish. There are nearly 1000 items in Tagalog and other Filipino languages, mostly linguistics, fiction, drama and poetry. Mostly mid- to late-19th century and 20th century publications. There are more than 100 serial titles.
History and development
The collection has developed in parallel with the School's research and teaching requirements. As the School has broadened its range of subjects, the Philippine collection has broadened to cover the humanities generally, and increasingly the social sciences as well. The library of the historian Ifor Powell, who had an interest in pre- and post-World War II Philippine economics, history, politics and administration, has been integrated into the collection. His private papers are part of the SOAS Archives.
Strengths
There are holdings on Tagalog and other Philippine languages, linguistics and literature and a large collection of Philippine English language fiction, drama and poetry. There are important collections, mostly in English but also in Spanish and Tagalog, on the anti-colonial struggles with Spain and the United States and the Philippine Revolution of 1896-1898. Twentieth century Philippine politics and government are particularly well represented including a microfilm set of "The Philippine radical papers". This is a collection of documents, brochures, periodicals, unpublished materials, manifestos, newsletters, and clippings, mainly of student, political and religious organizations advocating political, economic and social changes during the Marcos administration. There is a large collection of material on gender, human rights, trade unions, democracy and development studies, strengthened with the transfer of the library of the Philippine Resource Centre, a London-based NGO, to the collection. There is a good selection of material on urban and rural development, and on agriculture, forestry, human ecology and population studies. There is a growing collection of material on Islam in the Philippines and on Muslims, Mindanao and the Moro Liberation Front.
General arrangement and access regulations
Mainly open access. Older (pre-1880 publications), archives, manuscripts and microforms are closed access.
