Description of Collection

Content description

Manuscripts: 2 letters in Maguindanaoan in Arabic script.

Early printed books: about 30 pre-20th century titles, mostly Christian works printed by mission presses.

Modern printed books and periodicals: while books in Tagalog and other Philippine languages are held in OIOC, the main BL RS&CD collections have substantial holdings of western-language printed books on the Philippines.

The India Office Records of OIOC holds material relating to Sulu in the late 18th century.

History and development

Acquired by purchase from the 19th century onwards.

Strengths

The two 18th-century manuscript letters from Maguindanao bear the two of the earliest Islamic Philippine seals known. The collection of pre-20th century printed books contains some rare items.

All monographs and serials in Philippine languages catalogued since 1982 can be accessed through the BLPC. Earlier acquisitions are accessed through a card catalogue in the OIOC Reading Room, with author, title and subject sequence.
