Collection Details

History and Archaeology of Asia held at University of Glasgow Library [Institution record]

Description of Collection

Content description

A general collection of books, serials, some microfilms and official publications.

History and development

Reflects the teaching and research interests of the History and Archaeology Departments and some other University Departments, for instance the Institute of Central & East European Studies, as they have evolved during the past 500 years, plus related donations. Areas in which the collection is being developed to meet the needs of recently appointed staff or new teaching and research themes include Landscape Archaeology, the Archaeology of the Near and Middle East and the History of China, Israel and Russia. With the exception of China and Japan, South and East Asia is least well-represented.

Strengths

The Archaeology collection is particularly strong in foreign language material (particularly German and French), site reports and museum catalogues from the 19th century onwards, particular strengths being Egypt, India and the Near and Middle East, particularly Palestine/Israel. For instance, the library holds the Memoirs and Catalogues of the French Archaeological Mission in Cairo and Persia, American University Museum Catalogues and site reports, serial publications of the American, British, french and German archaeological missions to Egypt and the Middle East, the Egypt and Palestine Exploration Funds, the Archaeological Survey of India. The History Collections are particularly strong on Russia, colonial India, China, Japan, Israel/Palestine, description and travel in the Near and Middle East and North Africa and international relations in East Asia during the Cold War period. The Library holds several titles in the China report series and the Surveys of the Chinese Press. The Israel/Palestine collection, enhanced by official publications, has expanded considerably during the past 2 years and continues to expand.
